You put on upbeat music during an ordinary day and notice a small change in tension. Daily-life research found a related pattern during COVID-19 lockdown.

Music listening was prospectively associated with lower momentary stress levels. It also linked with better mood valence.

The association became stronger when listeners viewed the music as happy. The reported stress estimate was β −0.92, with a 95% CI of −1.80 to −0.04.

The mood estimate was β 1.90, with a 95% CI of 1.17 to 2.63. The study reported P = .04 for stress and P < .001 for mood valence.

These figures describe associations in daily life. They do not prove that happy music caused every change in stress or mood.

Context also matters. A 2017 study found that the main activity during listening had the greatest effect at the situational level.

The strength of a person’s music preference mattered most at the individual level. The reader’s activity and personal response therefore belong in the interpretation.

Sad music can help some aims and worsen low mood

You choose a sad song because the feeling seems too large for a bright one. Research shows that this choice can produce different results.

A 2014 study found that people who wanted mood enhancement often reached it through cognitive reappraisal or distraction first. The selected music could be sad.

Reappraisal means a change in how someone understands the situation. Distraction shifts attention away from the immediate problem.

The reader may therefore use sad music as part of a wider change in feeling. The song’s mood alone does not explain the reported improvement.

A separate 2013 study found significant increases in depression after participants listened to self-selected sad music. This occurred among ruminators and non-ruminators.

This finding concerns attention during listening. It shows a change in the listening experience within that study.

A 2020 review of music interventions for pain described three processes in its Cognitive Vitality Model. They were meaning-making, enjoyment, and musical integration.

The model also placed individual agency at the center of those processes. The listener’s active role therefore matters in the account of music’s effects.

Social setting adds another layer. A 2016 study linked engaging with music in company with others to subjective wellbeing.

A 2018 exploratory study proposed that music can serve as a temporary substitute for social interaction. It also found that music acts differently from television and fiction.

Music therapy studies test a guided setting

You may hear the phrase music therapy and wonder how it relates to pressing play alone. The research separates guided care from personal listening.

A 2020 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials reported a significant reduction in depressive symptoms for music therapy compared with a control group.

The reported standardized mean difference was SMD = −0.66, with a 95% CI of −0.86 to −0.46 and P < 0.001.

The same review reported a stronger effect for music medicine. Its estimate was SMD = −1.33, with a 95% CI of −1.96 to −0.70 and P < 0.001.

Those results come from structured research settings. They do not turn an individual listening habit into music therapy.

A 2023 randomized trial studied mindfulness-based music therapy with blind older women. DERS scores in the music therapy group were lower than in the control group at posttest.

The reported mean difference was 12.1, with a 95% confidence interval from 5.5 to 18.8. The music intervention group had a mean difference of 7.2.

A 2016 mobile experience study linked listening to cope with a situation or forget problems with negative affective states and poorer emotional health and wellbeing.

A 2014 study on young people found that music-related mood regulation could serve a maladaptive function in some people. It also offered another possible direction.

Young people with psychopathology might use music to try to reduce symptoms. The study could not settle which direction explained the relationship.

How to read the evidence for your own listening

You finish a song and need to judge what happened in your own mood. The strongest answer begins with the exact outcome you noticed.

Did the feeling change? Did attention move toward the music? Did stress feel lower? Did the song create connection or deepen sadness?

Research uses these separate outcomes for a reason. A change in mood does not automatically show a change in stress, sleep, depression, or wellbeing.

A pilot randomized trial with adults with early memory loss found improvement in psychological wellbeing and several areas of mood and sleep quality after 12 weeks.

Both the meditation and music groups showed significant improvement. The finding therefore does not isolate music as the only cause of change.

A pregnancy cohort study found that listening during pregnancy associated with higher wellbeing and fewer symptoms of postnatal depression in the first 3 months after birth.

The reported wellbeing estimate was β = 0.40, with SE = 0.15 and a 95% CI from 0.10 to 0.70. The depression estimate was β = −0.39.

Its 95% CI ran from −0.76 to −0.03, with SE = 0.19. These results describe a longitudinal association in that cohort.
