If you make unusual connections but struggle on one creativity test, openness isn’t disproved — different tasks measure different outcomes that only partly overlap

The research gives a clear link, then adds limits: Openness connects with creative thinking and artistic achievement, while Intellect connects more with scientific achievement.

That answer comes from several kinds of research. Some studies measured personality and performance at one point. Others followed people over time. A few tested changes after an experience.

Together, they show an association with creativity, plus effects that depend on the task and setting.

What openness to experience measures

You may recognise openness as a pull toward new ideas, unusual experiences, art, or complex questions. Personality researchers treat it as a broad trait with several parts.

The evidence supported Openness to Experience as a distinct personality dimension: one study found that it could stand on its own.

Extraversion and Sensation Seeking still showed links with its scales.

That matters for your question. A personality score does not capture one narrow habit. It can reflect interest in ideas, actions, feelings, and experiences.

The trait also differs from simple rebelliousness. One study found that reactive rebelliousness had a negative link with some Openness scales.

It did not predict how often people reported creative interests and activities.

Your openness score therefore cannot settle the creativity question by itself. It describes a pattern of traits.

Creativity research then checks how that pattern relates to a specific task or outcome.

Researchers have studied divergent thinking, creative products, creative achievement, learning choices, and reports of creative work. Those outcomes overlap, yet they do not mean the same thing.

Keep that difference in view as you read the findings. A link with one creativity measure does not automatically explain every creative result.

How openness relates to divergent thinking

You may have many possible answers to a problem, then wonder whether that says something about your personality. One study measured that link through divergent thinking.

In that study, Openness predicted dopamine effects on divergent thinking. The link between openness and divergent thinking was stronger in the dopamine blocker group.

The reported association was r = 0.304 in that group. It was r = −0.002 in the placebo group.

Those results describe an interaction. They do not show that openness alone creates a creative answer. They show that the association differed across the study conditions.

Divergent thinking also has a narrow meaning here. It refers to generating different possibilities. It does not measure the full process of making a useful painting, theory, design, or product.

Your experience may therefore fit one part of the evidence. You might produce many ideas quickly. Turning those ideas into a finished result involves other skills and conditions.

Another study tested creative achievement through a model that included Openness, ideational fluency, ideational originality, and intelligence. That design treated creativity as a result with several possible predictors.

The practical reading is simple. Openness can relate to the idea-generation side of creativity. The research does not support treating it as a complete explanation for every creative outcome.

Why arts and sciences show different patterns

You may feel creative in one area and less creative in another. The strongest direct comparison in these findings separates arts achievement from science achievement.

One study found that Openness predicted creative achievement in the arts. Intellect predicted creative achievement in the sciences.

That distinction gives the clearest answer to the effects question.

Openness has a meaningful place in creativity research, yet the same trait does not predict every creative field in the same way.

Creative achievement also involves more than interest. A person needs ideas, knowledge, practice, persistence, and a setting that lets the work develop.

A study of versatile scientists, philosophers, and writers found that versatile creators produced works with greater topical diversity than less versatile creators.

The finding concerns the range of subjects in creative products.

Topical diversity can describe a broad body of work. It cannot establish that every open person will produce important work. It also cannot rank one creative field above another.

Your own pattern may look uneven. Openness could show most clearly in artistic interests. Intellect could matter more when a task demands formal scientific reasoning.

These findings support a careful conclusion. Openness relates to creative achievement, especially in the arts, while different traits may matter more for other domains.

What openness changes in creative work

You may have a creative task in front of you and still need a reason to begin. Research on Openness links the trait with motivation and engagement during creative work.

One study found that people who scored high on Openness reported high intrinsic motivation. The same research examined creative process engagement.

Intrinsic motivation means the activity itself feels worth doing. It does not prove that a person will finish the task or produce a strong result.

Another study examined employee creativity. It found that the link between openness and incremental creativity changed with cognition-based trust in a co-worker.

This finding places the person inside a social setting. Openness may relate to creative work while trust changes how that relationship appears.

Workplace leadership can shape the same picture. A study of ethical leadership examined psychological safety, work engagement, Openness to Experience, and innovative work behaviors.

The study used mediation, moderation, and conditional process analyses. Those methods tested how the measured factors related within the research model.

Your creative result may therefore reflect both personality and context. A high openness score does not describe the whole room, team, or task.

The evidence supports a measured claim. Openness can accompany motivation, process engagement, and creative work. The setting still helps shape what researchers observe.

How learning choices fit the picture

You may choose an online course because new ideas feel appealing, then wonder whether openness influenced that choice. Research has tested this question directly.

A study of online learning adoption found that Neuroticism and Openness to Experience affected students’ intentions through five perceived values of online learning.

The result concerns intention to adopt online learning. It does not measure final grades, creative achievement, or the quality of the learning itself.

That boundary helps keep the finding useful. Openness may relate to how a person views a new learning format. It does not guarantee that the person will use it well.

Teacher behavior adds another part of the story. A study found that creativity-fostering teacher behavior related to student creative achievement through intrinsic motivation.

Openness moderated that relationship. The result suggests that personality can change how a learning environment connects with creative achievement.

Your response to a class may therefore depend on both the teaching style and your own traits. The evidence does not reduce the outcome to either one.

Learning is one reason the phrase effects needs care. The studies measure choices, motivation, and achievement in separate ways. They do not offer one universal effect of openness.

Can openness change over time

You may see your interests shift after treatment, cultural contact, work changes, or major experiences. Long-term research suggests that Openness has both stable and changing parts.

A 24-year longitudinal study found that stable levels of Openness predicted few work or love outcomes. Changes in Openness were linked with delayed romantic commitment and some career outcomes.

Those results concern life outcomes across time. They do not show that openness caused a particular decision. They show that individual differences in change related to some outcomes.

Another study tracked daily manifestations of Openness during intensive cognitive-behavioral treatment. Two latent classes described different starting levels and paths.

One group showed medium or increasing Openness. It included 86% of the sample. The other showed low or decreasing Openness. It included 14%.

These groups describe the sample in that treatment study. They do not predict which group any individual reader will join.

Cultural experiences offer another measured example. Participants exposed to cultural members and elements of foreign cultures reported higher Openness and less prejudice toward those groups than a control group.

The result suggests that some experiences can coincide with a shift in reported openness. It does not show that one brief experience permanently changes personality.

Your score can therefore reflect both continuity and movement. The research leaves room for change while keeping the limits of each study in view.

What brain studies can and cannot show

You may want a brain measure to confirm what your openness score means.

Brain studies offer clues about measured patterns, yet they do not turn a trait score into a diagnosis.

One study linked Openness and Intellect with efficiency in the default network. The reported effect for global efficiency was β = 0.25 with P = 0.03.

A second result from that research reported that Openness explained 18% of the variance in default network functioning after the study controlled for intelligence, age, gender, and other personality variables.

Another study found a negative association between within-network default mode connectivity and Openness.

Its regression coefficient was −0.0010, with a 95% confidence interval from −0.0017 to −0.0003.

These findings do not point in one simple direction. Different brain measures can relate to Openness in different ways.

A resting-state study predicted Openness from functional brain connectivity. The reported relationship was r = .24, with R² = .024.

Prediction at the group level differs from reading one person’s mind. A brain scan cannot tell your whole creative story from these findings.

Memory research adds another boundary. In one study, older adults had lower Openness scores than younger adults. The reported difference was d = −0.43.

The same study linked Openness with neural and performance measures of memory in older adults. It did not establish that a lower score causes a memory problem.

Your question deserves a cautious answer. Brain findings help describe associations around Openness. They do not replace personality measures, creative tasks, or the details of a person’s life.
